Weekly Call To Action - August 31, 2025

8/30/2025

Quote of the Week:

“Each time a person stands up for an idea, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” –Senator Robert F. Kennedy, June 6, 1966

Federal Actions:

Tell Congress: Pass D.C. Statehood Now

From Our Friends at the ACLU

The Trump administration has temporarily federalized the Metropolitan Police Department and is continuing to flood the streets of D.C. with federal agents and National Guard troops. The president promised to let police "do whatever the hell they want" – raising grave concerns about civil rights abuses, particularly for Black, Brown, and unhoused residents.

And here's the kicker: President Trump's takeover is only possible because D.C. isn't a state.

Congress can pass the Washington D.C. Admission Act and finally grant statehood to the residents of D.C., giving them some protection from federal overreach. But our representatives must act.
Action: Tell Congress: Pass D.C. Statehood now.

Stop the Persecution of Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Protestor holding sign saying “First they came for the immigrants.”
After being deported illegally due to “administrative error,” Kilmar Abrego Garcia was returned to his home in Maryland – only to be detained again last week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This time ICE says they intend to send him to Uganda, a country he has no connection with. Fortunately, federal judge Paula Xinis has extended a temporary restraining order halting his expulsion for now.

There is no reason for ICE’s vendetta against this man other than their embarrassment at having deported him by mistake the first time. They will literally send him to Uganda rather than admit they were wrong.

Action: Contact your Members of Congress

  • Senator Patty Murray, 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
  • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: As a constituent, I am disturbed by ICE’s continuing persecution of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, deported by “administrative error” last March, brought back to the US, and now under threat of deportation to Uganda, a country he has no connection with. I urge you to contact ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem; tell them to stop persecuting this innocent man.

WA State Actions:

Tell Governor Ferguson to Fight Back Against Republican Redistricting

Background: Redistricting Coup Underway

In the span of a week, Donald Trump and the Republican Party have launched a multi-state campaign to rig congressional maps, erase voters from the census, and weaponize law enforcement against elected officials — all in service of one goal: permanent GOP control of the House.

Trump’s redistricting coup only works if blue states sit back and do nothing. We can’t let that happen.

Washington state can act — but the direct gains in seats would be small, and in some cases, the changes could imperil current Democratic seats. The goal here is less about the map math and more about the message: We want their leaders to fight, not flinch.

Call and email Governor Bob Ferguson urging him to commit to exploring responsive redistricting with urgency — reviewing laws, building coalitions, and signaling readiness to act if Republicans gerrymander first.
Action: Get the call script here or use Indivisible's email template here.

From OI’s Federal team

Olympia Indivisible is launching a new Book Club for Democracy—and you’re invited.

As activists, we know our democracy is under threat. But we also know that knowledge, discussion, and shared strategy are powerful tools for change. This book club will help us sharpen critical thinking, understand the forces that undermine freedom, and explore ways people have successfully resisted authoritarianism—past and present.

Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just starting, you’ll find thought-provoking ideas and good company. Volunteer facilitators will lead discussions, and we’ll form several groups depending on interest, planning to meet in groups of 10-12 people once a month.

Sign up here and answer questions about your preferences.

Sample reading list:
  • Civil Resistance: What Everyone Needs to Know—Erica Chenoweth
  • Twilight of Democracy — Anne Applebaum
  • Strongmen: From Mussolini to the Present — Ruth Ben-Ghiat
  • Beautiful Trouble — Andrew Boyd & Dave Oswald Mitchell
  • On Tyranny — Timothy Snyder
  • Letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King
  • …and more, including works by Erica Chenoweth, George Orwell, and Heather Cox Richardson.

Let’s read, learn, and act—together.
