Weekly Call To Action - August 25, 2024

8/24/2024

Quote of the Week:

“For the first time in nearly a decade, politics is not all about Trump. This is to the credit of Harris, Walz, and their campaign. The race is now about the future, and about hope and joy, as opposed to the fear that dominated politics since Trump arrived on the scene.” – Dan Pfeiffer from The Message Box, August 19, 2024

Annual OI Picnic at Squaxin Park:

When We Work, We Win!

Olympia Indivisible’s annual all-member picnic will be on Sunday, September 8, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Squaxin Park Rose Garden Shelter. Our theme is: When We Work, We Win!

There is plenty to celebrate with our Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates: Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Joy is back in the land.

And along with conversation, cake, and good cheer, there will be opportunities to engage in the work that will help ensure that Democracy prevails in 2024. Plus you'll be able to:
  • sign up for opportunities to join OI in helping Harris and OI-endorsed candidates win
  • sign up for opportunities to help defeat the toxic ballot initiatives
  • meet some of our endorsed candidates
  • take home yard signs for candidates and NO on ballot initiatives (dress up your yard!)
  • take a selfie with our life-size cardboard cut-out of Kamala and Tim!
  • get your very own Olympia Indivisible button (and we'll also give away the remaining stock of our T-shirts)

What to Bring:
  • your own picnic supper (we will supply cake and lemonade)
  • a folding chair or camp chair if you have one

Action: RSVP here! We are limited to 100 attendees, so register today!

Federal Actions:

Violation of the Logan Act

Background: Donald Trump Accused of Committing 'Massive Crime' With Reported Phone Call - Newsweek

The Logan Act is legislation enacted by the United States Congress (1799) that forbids private citizens from engaging in unauthorized correspondence with foreign governments. Donald Trump continues to violate the law. The latest is meddling in President Biden’s peace negotiations in the Middle East by calling Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss them.

Action: Copy the following and email our Senators and House Rep.

Script: I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.
I understand that Donald Trump may have meddled in President Biden’s peace negotiations in the Middle East by calling Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss them on August 14. If true, it’s outrageous. It’s also a clear violation of the Logan Act, which prohibits unauthorized private citizens from negotiating with foreign governments on behalf of the U.S. Will you call for an investigation? Lives are at stake—lots of them. For the former president to put his own failing political prospects over the success of these negotiations is beyond the pale and, if he’s done so, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Thanks.

Local Actions:

Help with Observation of the Manual Ballot Recount for Dave Upthegrove

Dave Upthegrove
The manual recount process for the Public Lands Commissioner race began statewide with sorting the ballots into districts Friday. Starting this week, Olympia Indivisible's Dave Upthegrove team needs observers for the actual recount in Thurston County. As you know, Dave's lead over Republic Sue Pederson is razor thin (51 vote margin, to be precise). Observing the recount is an important piece of making sure the number of votes for Dave Upthegrove is accurate.

How can you help? We need two observers for 2-hour shifts: Tuesday, August 27 through Thursday, August 29, starting at 9:00 am.

Action: Contact both Joby and Donna with:
  • your name, email and phone.
  • which 2-hour shift(s) you are willing to cover, Tuesday, August 27 - Thursday, August 29, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.

NOTES:
  • Joby and Donna will notify you no later than Monday morning, confirming your shift time(s).
  • If there are changes in schedule or process, they will notify you as soon as possible.
  • You will be identified either as a member of the Thurston County Democrats or the Upthegrove campaign.
  • The names and the number of observers will be sent to the county election staff to ensure they have enough people to accompany the observers to prevent getting too close. If you have to cancel, do so as soon as possible - email both Joby and Donna - so they can either replace you or notify the election office.
  • You may hear that the recounting process will start Monday afternoon; we have those shifts covered. We need the observers from Tuesday morning until Thursday afternoon.

Messaging Tip of the Week

People texting on social media

We all need to be using smart messaging in conversation and on our social media feeds, to combat disinformation and doomcasting by using effective language and providing inspiring messages and calls-to-action. So for the next two months, we will share a MESSAGING OF THE WEEK TIP to make OI members (that’s you!) more effective messengers.

Here’s MESSAGING TIP #2

August marks the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. More than sixty years later, the freedom to vote is still not guaranteed for all – and MAGA politicians are working hard to silence our votes and our voices.

But we are Voters! We believe in our freedoms, and we can prevail, just as we have in the past. In honor of our power as voters, and in memory of all those who have risked their lives for our freedom to vote over the decades, check this week to confirm that you are registered (in Washington, go to vote.wa.gov). Tell your family, friends, and pro-democracy neighbors to do the same!

And then, pick ONE THING to help register likely pro-democracy voters in key battleground states. As Michelle Obama said: “Do something!”

Have You Scheduled These Events?

Indivisible Truth Brigade Kickoff Meeting 9/11/24 6:30 pm
Meeting the Disinfo Moment
Wednesday, Sept 11, 6:30-7:30pm ET/3:30-4:30pm PT

How do we meet the disinfo moment this fall?

  • We learn from expert Kelsey Suter how to identify and counter the most harmful lies.
  • We celebrate that disinfo falls flat when people value commonalities more than differences.
  • We learn from Truth Brigade founder Jody Rein to avoid taking the bait in the face of catchy dog whistles that can trigger prejudices we might not even know we hold.

And, of course, we act: we'll launch a new campaign to amplify tactical messages online and off, and plan out our fall work together.
