Weekly Call To Action - July 13, 2025

7/12/2025

Quote of the Week:

“To me, being an American is to have a voice that can bring change. Because my motivation for becoming American is to be able to impact, create spaces, and sway policy that could change somebody's life.”--Haitian immigrant Erolina Henry, newly naturalized US citizen, quoted in USA Today, July 2

Help Our Candidates Win!

Poster to ask for help getting candidates elected

It’s time to volunteer! Help progressive candidates for our city councils, school boards, and Port win by showing up for boots-on-the-ground events this month. There are plenty of options: door belling, rallies, sign waves, and meet-and-greets. You’ll find them all on our Local Elections 2025 Events calendar. This calendar will be continuously updated. Also check it out on our website at any time.

Indivisible National Actions:

Join Indivisible National’s One Million Rising to Fight Authoritarianism

One Million Rising sign with dates of July,16, July 30 and August 13
Big mobilizations like No Kings Day are powerful — they capture national attention and remind us what collective action looks like. But real change takes more than one day. To stop the rise of MAGA extremism, we need a long-term strategy that reaches far beyond a single moment. That’s why we’re launching One Million Rising.

Authoritarians count on people staying passive. But it doesn’t take a majority to resist — just a critical mass willing to say no and mean it. When enough of us refuse to go along, we can throw a wrench in their plans. One Million Rising is a nationwide effort to train a million people in smart, strategic resistance that slows, blocks, and breaks authoritarian power.

Indivisible National is offering three training sessions, and we’d love for you to join all of them. Can’t make it live? We’ve got you covered — recordings will be shared in our follow-up email to all registered participants.

Be part of this three-session training to learn how we can motivate, train, and equip our movement in the practice of strategic non-cooperation to push back against implementation of fascist programs. These trainings take place every other Wednesday at 5pm PT starting July 16.

Federal Actions:

Support the Victims of Texas Flooding

Overview of Texas flood
From OI’s State Executive Team

Background: Flooding in Texas has left 119 dead so far, almost 180 still missing

The disastrous flooding in the Texas Hill Country came without warning. Homes, farmland, and infrastructure have been badly damaged, over a hundred people have died, and many are still missing. To add insult to injury, more heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days. The people of central Texas need relief efforts to survive and rebuild.

Action: Consider donating to one of the many nonprofits that are assisting first responders and victims of the detrimental flooding. With this aid, Texas can conduct search and rescue for the many people that are still missing, provide hot meals for those affected, and help rebuild lost infrastructure.

WA State Actions:

Thank Superintendent Reykdal for Funding the Imagination Library

Child reading a book
From OI’s State Executive Team

Background:
  • Imagination Library in Washington loses state funding
  • Superintendent Reykdal extends funding for another year

The Dolly Parton-founded Imagination Library expanded into Washington in 2022 with supplemental funding from the state government. This organization provides free books to children under the age of five, encouraging a love of reading and learning to all young children regardless of socioeconomic status. This year, the state legislature was forced to make cuts due to a budget shortfall, which unfortunately included the Imagination Library. Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal was able to provide the funding necessary to continue the Imagination Library’s mission in Washington for another year with his department’s discretionary funding. He plans to advocate for funding after those funds run out.

Action: Contact Superintendent Reykdal to thank him for extending the funding for this beneficial early learning program.
  • General email: [email protected]
  • Superintendent’s executive assistant: [email protected]

Script: (Optionally, include whether you have a child that benefits from the Imagination Library program or know someone who does.)
My name is (NAME) and I live in (LOCATION). Thank you for extending funding for the Imagination Library for another year following the loss of state funding, and for advocating for additional program funding. Your efforts benefit young children of Washington by encouraging early learning and a love of reading, regardless of zip code or socioeconomic status.

Submitted by the OI Union and Workers Justice Team

Source: Teamsters Go to War Against Republic Services

Show solidarity with Republic Services sanitation workers as they strike for living wages and hard-earned benefits. Republic Services is a nationwide waste management company that has earned massive profits thanks to its hard working employees. They manage the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Facility. Republic has refused to settle a fair contract and has utilized union busting tactics.

This strike will not affect garbage pick-up in our region. Work stoppages began in Boston, Illinois, Georgia, and Southern California. Thurston County Teamsters Local 252 joined the strike on July 9.

Action: Picket/sign wave with the Teamsters Local 252 at the Lacey Transfer Station, 2420 Hogum Bay Rd NE, Lacey, WA 98516, about half a mile off I-5 Exit 111. Pickets are 7 days a week, 6:30am - 4:30pm, until a contract settlement is reached.

Thank Olympia City Council for Their Recent Statement on “ICE in the Community”

From OI’s Immigrant Justice team

On June 26, 2025, the City Council released a statement in which they recognize the immense amount of anxiety that ICE is creating in immigrant communities and communities of color in Olympia. “Illegal immigrant, legal immigrant, native-born American, what those challenged and those detained by ICE seem to have in common is that they are all people of color.”

As a sanctuary city, Olympia Police Department does not share information with ICE; the Council stated that all residents are valued and welcomed. The Council and City staff are in conversation with Senators and Representatives at the Federal level, asking them to put pressure on these agencies to make certain that the law is being followed. Every person has a right to due process of law under the US Constitution – as well as the right to assemble, to have counsel, to not be subjected to unreasonable search and seizure, and more.

Read the full statement here: City Council statement on ICE in the community

Action: Send a thank you email to each City Council member; here are the Council members and their emails:
  • Clark Gilman [email protected]
  • Yen Huynh [email protected],wa.us
  • Dontae Payne [email protected]
  • Dani Madrone [email protected]
  • Kelly Green[email protected]
  • Robert Vanderpool [email protected]
  • Jim Cooper[email protected]

Or OI members can send a single email to the central email: [email protected]

Script: Thank you for speaking up for immigrants’ rights. Please continue to put pressure on these agencies to make certain that they follow the law and respect human rights.
