Quote of the Week: “Every authoritarian who successfully destroyed judicial independence did so because civil society failed to unite in time,” political scientist Adam Bonica writes. “The key difference? Whether people mobilized.” From Heather Cox Richardson’s newsletter May 27, 2025 Get Out on the Streets:
Federal Actions:Fight Trump’s Claw Back of National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting Service Funding Photo by Louis Velazquez on Unsplash Background: While Republicans are pushing through the big budget bill, Trump doesn’t want to wait for the regular budget process for some agencies. He’s asked both houses of Congress to claw back about $9 billion in funds through a special, rarely used process. Rescission allows the President to identify funding he finds objectionable and ask Congress to remove it immediately. Trump’s request has targeted agencies that distribute foreign aid spending, as well as public broadcasting. Big targets are PBS and NPR, which Trump calls radical woke propaganda disguised as news. The recission process has a short timeline–only 45 days in each house–and was adopted by the House on June 12 by one vote. PBS and NPR’s appropriations amount to only $1.1 billion – less than 0.003% of our national debt. Especially with today’s chaotic news and events, PBS’s important function of distributing funds to TV stations around the country in small and rural communities is essential, as is NPR’s provision of news coverage to over 1,000 stations nationally. Because of the House vote, the only way to halt rescission of public media funding is to stop it in the Senate. Action: Contact your Senators to let them know how much you care.
Script: Thousands of journalists, engineers, and media professionals depend on public media funding to serve their communities. If Congress cuts this support, over 16,000 jobs could be lost — and millions of listeners could lose access to trusted news and cultural programming. Public radio isn’t just media — it’s a public service. Please stand up for it. Oppose rescission and support continued public media funding. WA State Actions:Protect Our Children from Violence Photo by Zahra Amiri on Unsplash From the Indivisible Bellingham Actions Team Background:
On June 2, three little Wenatchee girls were found murdered after a court-ordered visitation with their father, who had a history of violence, in spite of their mother begging the courts not to send them. A WA state house bill proposed by Rep. Alicia Rule in 2024 could have saved these girls' lives, and could still save the lives of other children like them. It did not pass. Action: Write or call Representative Rule to express your support for HB 2010, and write or call Governor Ferguson urging him to support the bill and sign it into law in 2026.
Script (feel free to edit): Representative Rule, I applaud your introduction of HB 2010 in 2024 to protect Washington’s children from family violence. This is an important issue which I hope will have bipartisan support in the 2026 Legislative session. Governor Ferguson, I strongly support HB 2010 as introduced by Representative Rule in 2024. Washington must protect its children from the kind of tragedy that took the lives of three little Wenatchee girls on June second. I urge you to do your best to see this bill become state law.
