Saving The Planet Is Job #1
The email below was written by OI member Dusty Rhodes. It is well written and to the point. Please read it and use it for this Action.
I just sent the following reply to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in response to an email request for donations to support its sponsorship of the democratic presidential debates.
I invite others who may share my concern for the existential threat posed by the Climate Crisis to do the same. Please feel free to copy any or all of my letter to the DNC.
I respect, I appreciate, and I regularly donate to individual members of Congress who I see working tirelessly on behalf of Washington State and the country. But, the DNC will get no more donations from me until the DNC fully acknowledges the Climate Crisis as our most serious existential threat to the planet, which it is, and to the ultimate survival of humanity. And, once the DNC hopefully acknowledges the Climate Crisis for what it is, it must then act accordingly and schedule a presidential debate that focuses exclusively on both educating voters about the nature of Climate Crisis and the absolute imperative that our next president has what it takes to tackle this Crisis head on.
There is nothing hypothetical about this issue – either those running the DNC understand the science that explains the nature of Climate Crisis and the consequences to humanity of ignoring that science – or they don't. And, so far they're acting as if they don't, which, in my view, is the height of hypocrisy during what is now unequivocally the most critical election ever in America's history. I am not trafficking in hyperbole. This is our only, now-or-never, once-in-a-lifetime, do-or-die chance to re-stabilize the planet's biosphere, so that future generations will have at least a reasonable chance of surviving in a chaotic world that we can barely even imagine.
If we as a species don't fully commit to mobilizing every available resource NOW toward reversing the causes of Climate Change within the next 11.5 years, then we and all future generations are doomed to struggle for survival on an increasingly hostile and uninhabitable planet, and no other issue we may care about will matter - not now, not ever - because Climate Chaos will be running rampant, wild, and well beyond our ability to control it; and it will render all other issues that we care about irrelevant. The struggle of simply trying to find ways to survive will dominate every future human thought, decision and action.
It is not a world I want to condemn my children to inherit, and I want a president who sees this reality for what it is and who will not shrink, either from telling it like it is or from doing any and all that must be done to prepare for and/or prevent the worst of what is already in store for us. And it is all due to our collective failure to act sensibly, way back in the 1970s, when we (via Exxon) first learned of the perils that the burning of fossil fuels was creating. For decades we have pushed the Earth’s natural systems beyond their ability to sustain us, and now the Earth is pushing back. We had better pay attention.
So WAKE UP, DNC, and schedule a presidential debate that focuses exclusively on the Climate Crisis so that we voters can find out which candidates not only take this issue seriously, but who also have a solid plan for addressing it that is either equivalent to or better than the Green New Deal. As Washington State's Governor Jay Inslee correctly observes, we are the first generation to experience the consequences of Climate Change and the last generation that is able to take meaningful action to reverse it before critical tipping points are passed by forever.
What is it about the Climate Crisis that the DNC still doesn't get?
ACTION: Use this letter or a variation on it to respond to every Dem presidential campaign donation request you get (I get plenty and I bet you do too). You can also send it to Dem candidates who don’t ask you for money.
Protect Your LGBTQ Neighbors’ Health
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed a rule that would roll back a regulation in the Affordable Care Act that prohibits discrimination against patients who are transgender or have previously undergone an abortion.
Kris Hayashi, the executive director of the Transgender Law Center called the proposed rule an “outright attack from the Trump administration on the health, well-being, and survival of transgender people.” Louise Melling, the deputy legal director with the American Civil Liberties Union, said that rolling back these protections would “lead to devastating health consequences.”
The proposed rule is open for public comment until August 13th.
ACTION: Submit a comment on the administration’s proposal to remove nondiscrimination protections for gender identity from the Affordable Care Act regulations.
Go to https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=HHS-OCR-2019-007 and tell the Department of Health and Human Services what you think of the administration’s proposal. State why you oppose the proposal based on your values.
Comments must be unique and individual, not scripted.
Stop Gerrymandering - Promote Fair Election Districts
Following the Supreme Court decision that courts cannot resolve partisan gerrymandering, new legislation has been introduced to protect Americans’ votes. The Fair Maps Act of 2019 (S.1972) was introduced in the Senate, and the Redistricting Reform Act of 2019 was introduced in the House to require that states adopt independent redistricting commissions to draw new district maps after each decennial census. We want our Members of Congress to cosponsor the legislation to fix the redistricting process.
ACTION: Call our Senators and ask them to cosponsor S. 1972, the Fair Maps Act of 2019.
ACTION: Call Congressman Denny Heck and ask him to cosponsor the Redistricting Reform Act of 2019.
Trump hasn’t invaded anywhere yet and we don’t want him to start. We must continue to make it clear to our senators that they must prevent this from happening.
Tom Udall introduced Senate Bill: S.1039 - Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019 on April 4, 2019.
“This bill prohibits funds from being used for kinetic military operations against Iran unless Congress authorizes such an action, with various exceptions such as in response to an imminent threat. ("Kinetic military operations" typically refers to active military actions, in contrast to latent operations or cyberwarfare.)”
Currently this bill has 25 cosponsors, but neither of our senators are among them. We need to encourage them to cosponsor this bill and oppose any military action in Iran.
S.1039 - Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019
Tell all of them to make it clear to Trump that Congress will not authorize, support or fund any war.

Keep the Heat On: Impeachment Inquiry
How do we persuade our Members of Congress to act? Call them this week and ask where they stand on starting an Impeachment Inquiry.
My name is _____________. I live in District 10 and am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I would like to know where Senator/Congressman ___________ stands on beginning an Impeachment Inquiry.
(listen and respond with other questions you might have)
Finish your call with:
“I am very concerned with the cost of inaction. Not only does the Mueller Report establish ample evidence to begin an Inquiry, this President continues to commit more and more acts of obstruction and corruption. The House needs the power and credibility of an actual Impeachment Inquiry. What is happening right now is not working.”

The Truth: Recent Misleading Video about New Thurston County Courthouse Proposal
On April 30, 2019, the Board of County Commissioners voted 2-1 to add a ballot proposition to increase the levy of the regular property tax to fund a new Courthouse and Regional Administrative Building during the April 28, 2020 election. The ballot requires a simple majority to pass. https://www.thurstoncountywa.gov/bocc/Pages/courthouse-civic-project.aspx
The people that supported the recently fired Thurston Conservation District Supervisors and supported Tye Menser’s opponent have a new video out. It tries to give voters the impression that the proposed new Thurston Courthouse will cost individual voters a lot more than it actually will.
Commissioner Tye Menser recently posted this on his official Facebook page.
“Lots of misinformation in a recent video about the proposed courthouse project: (1) the average homeowner would pay less than $12/month; (2) the county spends roughly $1.5M/year in maintenance on the current courthouse; (3) putting our planning staff in jail cells underneath the court is not a tenable alternative solution; (4) our judges have advocated for this project based on space and safety concerns ... the list goes on and on. Please review the facts on our county homepage if you have any other questions. A simple property tax calculator is included there.”
