Quote of the Week:“The America I've sung to you about for 50 years is real and, regardless of its faults, is a great country with a great people. So we'll survive this moment.”--Bruce Springsteen, The Week WA State Actions:Thank Governor Ferguson for Signing Bill to Investigate Private Detention CentersSource: Washington Governor Bob Ferguson This week Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson signed HB 1232, a new law that grants the state sweeping authority to conduct health inspections at private detention facilities. Currently, private detention facilities in Washington operate without meaningful transparency or accountability. For years, DOH inspectors have been blocked from entering the Northwest ICE Processing Center, operated by the for-profit prison corporation GEO Group. In 2023, lawmakers passed HB 1470 to grant DOH authority to regulate health and safety in the facility, but a federal judge halted enforcement of certain parts of that law, which are now under appeal. HB 1232 builds on and clarifies the state’s inspection authority–ensuring that DOH can move forward with unannounced inspections and impose fines of up to $10,000 per violation, or up to $1 million total for continued noncompliance. The new law follows months of protests sparked by recent detainments at the facility. Action: Thank Governor Ferguson for signing the new law.
Script: As a Washington resident who supported your campaign for governor, I want to thank you for signing into law HB 1232. This long needed, long overdue law will ensure some measure of safety against human rights abuses for our vulnerable immigrant detainees at the Northwest ICE Processing Center. Please do all that you can to ensure that standards are developed and implemented as swiftly as possible. More than 300 trees have been registered so far, and the hope is to at least double that number before the end of June. Restoring Earth Connection has a squad of trained volunteers who talk to their neighbors about all the amazing things that trees do and especially our biggest trees. They encourage people to protect the trees in their yard. Tree Ambassadors also are helping Olympia identify the biggest tree in every neighborhood and the biggest tree of each species. You can either be trained to be a Tree Ambassador, or self-register your trees. Action: You can register your tree on your own on the Restoring Earth Connection website with their form. Our goals are to find creative expressions that say “No to Kings” and “Yes to Democracy”. For example, you could organize a table to do:
