Tell the House of Representatives to Do Its Job!

As we come to grips with the changes forced upon us by the COVID virus, The U.S. House of Representatives has floundered to operate. Although House leadership has moved to hastily put together financial packages, the entire U.S.House has yet to decide how to do its work during the pandemic.

The problem is complex. In order to allow working or voting remotely, long standing rules will need to be changed. Republicans, led by House Minority Leader McCarty are reluctant to agree to any changes, largely because they don’t want the House to be effective.
According to the Washington Post, “Last week, Pelosi endorsed a plan devised by House Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) to allow for proxy voting in limited circumstances — permitting members to authorize a colleague to vote on the floor on their behalf — but Republicans erupted in protest, and plans for a vote were postponed.”

It’s time to play hardball.  We want House leadership to move aggressively and make realistic changes that will allow it to do its job. Without oversight, Trump will continue to use this time to deepen the damage he has done to our country.

ACTION: Call Denny Heck and tell him we want Congress to go back to work now by making the emergency rules necessary to allow them to work safely and effectively.

Script: My name is ______. In this time of national crisis, we urgently need the House to make temporary emergency rules that will allow it to safely do its work. Congress should be providing oversight, requiring officials to testify, and meeting to advance legislation. Republicans are happy to keep the House in limbo while the President deepens the damage he is doing to our country. House leadership needs to act now.

Thank Governor Inslee for His Leadership in Dealing with the Coronavirus Crisis
Governor Jay Inslee has faced the challenge of the Coronavirus pandemic and is leading one of the most successful battles to contain the virus. Our Governor took decisive action with the “stay home, stay healthy” order. The majority of people in Washington support the order, and we are flattening the curve by staying home. A small minority of protesters have recently demonstrated against the order, and we need to tell the Governor that we support his actions and trust his plans to reopen carefully. The key to success will be adequate testing. Governor Inslee recently wrote to Mike Pence requesting a strong national testing program to address the lack of critical supplies for testing. While we have laboratories to process test results, we do not have an adequate supply of swabs, viral transport media, and reagents to take advantage of our lab capacity. We need emergency funding and a national testing program before we can safely reopen businesses.
ACTION:  Call Governor Jay Inslee to thank him for his letter to Mike Pence requesting a strong national testing plan and to thank him for his leadership in consulting public health experts to guide public policies during the pandemic.

Script: My Name is _______________, and I am a member of Olympia Indivisible. I am calling to thank Governor Inslee for the letter he wrote to Mike Pence requesting a strong national testing program to address the supply shortages which limit testing. I appreciate the Governor’s leadership in consulting public health experts to guide public policies during the pandemic. Thank you.

From Indivisible National
The party that controls the presidency and the Senate has shown no compassion for human suffering and no basic competence in the face of a pandemic.
It’s not "polite" to say it, but it’s true: with Mitch McConnell musing aloud that it’d be fine for states to go bankrupt, and Trump suggesting that people inject bleach into their bodies (DON’T!), there’s no other way to say it. The GOP is willing to let people die in order to protect their corporate backers’ financial interests.
So far, Democrats in the House have been too quick to go along with McConnell’s Senate. And every time they fold and give McConnell what he wants, we have less leverage for the next bill.
Here’s what a moral and ethical government would do right now:
  • Keep people on payrolls: Stop mass layoffs, and preserve employment relationships for all businesses, including small businesses. Ensure federal dollars go to workers and small businesses, not enriching CEOs and Wall Street.
  • Provide financial relief: Expand aid for the most vulnerable in the COVID-19 epidemic, including direct cash assistance, increased food aid, debt relief, and eviction protections.
  • Protect public health: Guarantee full health coverage for all COVID-19 care and protections for all frontline workers.
  • Defend elections: Enact a vote-by-mail requirement for 2020 federal elections while maintaining access to in-person voting for those who do not have access to mail voting.
Those aren’t complicated asks. It boils down to protect people and protect democracy before enriching corporations. So, we’re making what we think is a pretty simple ask: Every Member of Congress should pledge not to vote for a COVID relief bill that doesn’t cover those four principals.
Onboard? Below is what we need you to do. Otherwise, read on…
✅ Take the pledge yourself — tell us you’re going to fight with us for real relief.
✅ Make a call to your member of Congress T-O-D-A-Y and ask them to take the pledge to vote no on the next package unless it does these four things we mentioned above.
✅ When you’ve hung up the phone, follow up with an email to your representative demanding that they take the pledge and tell them you’re paying attention.
✅ Email sent? Use this tool to tweet at them for good measure (we’re hearing right now that social media is a more effective tool to engage with your members of Congress than usual because of remote working and social distancing).
✅ Finally, make your voice heard by recording a video. Say your name, where you’re from, and that you demand your representative take the People’s Agenda Pledge to vote no on the next coronavirus package unless it means real relief for all people. Upload it to social and tag them!

Help our Arizona-Michigan Team and our USPS at the same time
Many of you undoubtedly received the email (copied below) from the Arizona-Michigan Team, encouraging you to write letters while we’re practicing social distancing. We would like to remind everyone that there is an added benefit in patronizing the United States Postal Service.
We also want to encourage you to remind our MoC of the importance in saving the USPS. Every time you receive an email from a MoC or the DNC requesting a donation, you make your request that they save the Postal Service.   My reply is concise, “When you save USPS, I will send you money.

The Arizona-Michigan Team email:
The Arizona-Michigan Home Team of Olympia Indivisible is expanding home delivery of postcard packets to the entire OI membership.
You (yes! you!) can make really good use of your time during this stay-at-home period by writing postcards to newly registered Democrats in Maricopa County, Arizona, encouraging them to register to get their ballots by mail. Here’s how it works:
  1. 1)  Packets containing 50 postcards, addresses, instructions and a script will be delivered to your doorstep. They will be packaged on a sterilized surface by OI volunteers following best sanitation practices (freshly washed hands, wearing masks and gloves). For an extra layer of safety, you can set your packet aside for 72 hours before you begin your work.
  2. 2)  To request packet(s) go to postcardrequest.gmail.com. Tell us how many packets you’d like, and your address for delivery. If you want them left somewhere other than your porch, please let us know.
  3. 3)  You provide your own stamps. You can order them online at the address provided on the guideline sheet. If purchasing stamps is a hardship, we can help! Just add a note to your request for cards, and they’ll be included in your packet.
  4. 4)  Completed postcards do not need to be stored for later mailing. You mail them after you fill them out.
  5. 5)  After you mail all of your cards, send an email to postcardrequest@gmail.com  and let us know you’re finished. We’re tracking how many cards are mailed.
  6. 6)  If you can’t write, but are able to contribute money towards expenses, please donate! You can do this online at olympiaindivisible.org, or mail a check to Olympia Indivisible, P.O. Box 2616, Olympia, WA 98507. Please make a note on the check or online donation that the donation should be directed toward the AZMI Home Team.

ACTION:  Contact the Arizona-Michigan team at postcardrequest.gmail.com and write some cards and mail them.
Reply to donations requests from Congress-members, the DNC, the DCCC, the DSCC, or the DLCC that you will contribute to their campaign when they save the United States Postal Service.

Giving to the community in the age of Covid 19

In this age of Covid-19 many of our community are in need of assistance in so many ways. The following are ways for you to contribute.

You can donate items directly to people in your neighborhood who have posted their needs through the buynothingproject.org (it portal through Facebook).

Many of the Olympia downtown business have gofundme.com pages asking for sustaining dollars.
For a larger organization got to The Thurston County COVID-19 Response Fund https://www.unitedway-thurston.org/covid-19As our community continues to confront the COVID-19 pandemic, two organizations have come together to create the Thurston County COVID-19 Response Fund in support of vital nonprofits and vulnerable families. United Way of Thurston County (UWTC) and Community Foundation of South Puget Sound (CFSPS) launched the fund on March 16 and immediately received an influx of donations made by generous community members and businesses. To date, the fund is already positively impacting nonprofit groups whose existence might otherwise be threatened by the sudden economic changes brought on by the pandemic. In addition, on March 23 the fund was able to start providing assistance to families with children impacted by the pandemic. Here’s a couple programs they are supporting.

Meals on Wheels Doubles Delivery
Senior Services of South Sound (SSS) helps seniors in Thurston, Mason and Lewis counties stay active, connected and well-fed. Their Meals on Wheels program ensures that all seniors have access to at least one complete, nutritious meal per day. With almost all of our community’s seniors now isolated in their homes, the need for this service has skyrocketed at the same time SSS has had to discontinue its regular fundraising activities such as bingo nights.

Baby Wipes & Formula
The Nurse-Family Partnership program (NFP) has also benefited from the new fund. NFP pairs registered nurses with first-time parents in low-income circumstances. Their clients represent some of the families who will be hit hardest by this crisis.

Organizations that help our low-income and unsheltered population will also benefit from the new funding source. The Community Action Council helps low-income community members cover basic expenses such a rent and utilities, while Catholic Community Services and Interfaith Works provide meals and hygiene supplies to our unsheltered and food-insecure community members. All three organizations have already received financial support from the new fund.

You can be a part of this movement. Please make a donation online through United Way of Thurston County’s website, www.unitedway-thurston.org/covid-19 or by mail to United Way of Thurston County, 3525 7th Ave SW Suite 201, Olympia, WA 98502.
