Weekly Call To Action - March 20, 2022

3/20/2022

Quote of the Week:

A major antidote to despair is engagement and participation. – Martin Keogh

Take Three Actions Now:

Ask President Biden to Deploy Renewable Energy Against Putin

Picture

Background: President Biden has halted all oil and gas imports from Russia, because we cannot add fuel to this war. Now, we must urge him to take another necessary step to protect our planet. With the price of gas increasing in the United States, policy-makers may be tempted to increase domestic fossil fuel production. This would be disastrous for our nation and the world.

Putin’s ability to wreak destruction on Ukraine is predicated on global dependence on his nation's fossil fuels. Oil and gas constitute forty percent of Russia’s national revenue, meaning Russian exports of oil and gas are literally funding this invasion. What’s more, global reliance on Russian oil and gas slowed our collective will to respond over fear of higher energy costs the world over.

Instead, Biden can use his executive powers to invoke the Defense Production Act and accelerate the development of renewable energy, lowering our reliance on fossil fuels for good.

Action 1: Contact President Biden

Option A: Email President Biden and ask him to use the Defense Production Act to rapidly ramp up the deployment of renewable energy.

  • President Biden at 202-456-1111 Tues-Thurs, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM or Contact Us | The White House

Script: My name is _______ and I live in _________. I want to thank President Biden for halting oil and gas imports from Russia. I urge him to continue to resist short-sighted policies such as scaling up domestic fossil fuel production or expanding oil and gas infrastructure or financing, which would only deepen our dependence on fuels that lead to global instability and create further devastating climate impacts.

I ask President Biden to swiftly deploy his executive powers to weaken the geopolitical power of fossil fuels, address the climate emergency, and prevent further mass suffering.

The Defense Production Act can provide the opportunity to produce alternatives to fossil fuels, fight the climate emergency, combat the stranglehold that Putin and other dictators have on the world’s energy economy, and support the transition to a renewable and just economy.

Help Russian Journalists Stand Up to Putin

Picture

We can help end the war in Ukraine by helping the Russian people hear the truth.  Although ethical journalism is blocked in Russia, Independent Russian Journalists that fled to Latvia are working to push back against Putin’s propaganda. You can read about their courageous work through the news outlet Meduza.

Despite being designated  a “foreign agent” by Putin, Meduza continues to find ways to get the truth to the Russian people. You can donate directly (Help Meduza/Help Now button on the website). They are trusted, respected journalists that are directly helping Ukraine with their brave work. This is a tangible, real way to help end the war.

Action 2: Read Meduza reporting and donate here.

By removing the dams, we will be honoring tribal treaty rights that have been ignored for decades.

Upcoming Vital Elections
We Are Stepping Up

Picture

Upcoming Vital Elections
Although we are returning to some physical normalcy, there is nothing normal about what is happening in Congress whose right-wing members remain a roadblock to progress. Congressional and local elections for 2022 are vitally important and coming up all too quickly. We need to protect the democracy we know, before we lose it.

We Are Stepping Up
Olympia Indivisible leadership is asking you to step up and be part of what needs to be done during the days and weeks leading up to the November 2022 elections. With limited resources, we want to focus on what we can do that is most useful and effective.

Action: Come to the All Member Meeting on Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 AM and hear about our local and congressional plans. You are an important part of this effort. Register here. Be part of making a future we can live with.

Support Youth Climate Strike

Picture

On Friday, March 25th at 12 noon, youth from high schools throughout Thurston County will be gathering at Heritage Park on Capitol Lake for a Youth Climate Strike. Perhaps you remember the powerful momentum gained during the climate strikes of 2019! For the last two years, the student strikers were forced to take a hiatus due to the pandemic.

Now, the youth are ready to begin striking again, and we want to show up in force to support them. There will be a rally with youth speakers followed by a march to city hall. Come prepared for rain or shine with signs supporting climate justice and a healthy future!

Action: Please spread the word and share widely to support the powerful youth leaders in our community.
