Weekly Call To Action - March 27, 2022

3/27/2022

Quote of the Week:

“Life is political, not because the world cares about how you feel, but because the world reacts to what you do.” ― Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century

Take Two Actions Now:

Justice Clarence Thomas Must Recuse Himself

Picture
Days ago, we learned that Justice Thomas’ wife Ginni Thomas repeatedly pressed former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows to pursue unrelenting efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in urgent text exchanges in the critical weeks following the vote.

Justice Thomas’s participation in the Supreme Court case on this matter is only the latest example of his severely compromised sense of impartiality and morality: Thomas is the only justice on the Supreme Court who voted to withhold evidence from the January 6th Committee that implicated his wife. This is a clear violation of ethics.

Justice Thomas must recuse himself from cases that implicate his wife, including litigation regarding the Jan. 6 House Committee, which is examining Ms. Thomas’s communications.

Action 1: Copy to your letterhead, then print and mail the following to Chief Justice John Roberts:

Attention: Chief Justice John Roberts
Supreme Court of the United States
1 First Street, NE
Washington, DC 20543

Dear Chief Justice Roberts,

The integrity of the Supreme Court is in great danger now. This week, Americans learned that the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas repeatedly urged others to commit federal crimes to overturn the 2020 presidential election for weeks after Congress had ratified the election. Her messages were among the materials sought by the Congressional Committee on January 6 that were the subject of Supreme Court review. Only one Supreme Court justice voted to withhold this evidence from the Congressional Committee, her husband, Clarence Thomas. There is one obvious reason for his vote, to protect his wife from prosecution for violation of federal laws. Most Americans will interpret his action that way, a major blemish on the integrity of the Supreme Court.

Our judicial system has a simple tool to avoid this type of situation, recusal. It reduces the risk of federal judges actively corruptly and it assures the public of the objectivity, impartiality and integrity of the judicial system. Clarence Thomas may be acting corruptly, trying to protect a family member from prosecution. He is acting without objectivity and impartiality. How can a judge be impartial and objective when the matter involves his own wife?

Chief Justice Roberts, surely you understand the damage this is doing to the institution that is in your hands. To protect the integrity of the Supreme Court, which is your responsibility as Chief Justice, you must arrange for Clarence Thomas to publicly announce that he will recuse himself from all future cases that implicate his family members or associates. Further, there must be consequences for Clarence Thomas’s callous disregard of the integrity of the Court. You must announce that you are penalizing him, through procedures that you oversee as Chief Justice, so that the public understands that nobody, even Justices of the Supreme Court, are exempt from measures designed to safeguard the integrity of our judicial system.

Thank you,

[Name]

Big Oil Price Gouging

Picture
At a time when our economy is just recovering from the economic hardships of the pandemic, oil companies seize the opportunity to price gouge and increase their profits.

Action 2: Contact our Members of Congress and tell them to act now.

Option A: Contact your representatives by telephone or email.

  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 253-572-2281 or Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
    • Email all three MOCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: Act now to call out Big Oil’s unprecedented profits. Join Senator Cantwell in requesting hearings to investigate why Oil Companies are on track to give a record 40 billion to investors in stock buy backs instead of investing in renewables. I also urge Senator_____ to co-sponsor Senator Sheldon Whitehouse's bill to tax oil windfall profits and use those funds to support low income families.

Push Port Commissioners to Make OYO Suite Hotel
Available for Low Income Senior Housing

Picture
OYO Hotel near Tumwater Airport - property is owned by the
Port of Olympia and regulated by the Federal Aviation Commission.

If you are a senior forced to live in your car because rent is unaffordable, would you not welcome a permanent low-rent apartment in a building like the OYO Hotel in Tumwater?

New construction for low-income senior housing is prohibitively expensive while rehabbing existing suite buildings like the OYO Hotel is within reach. The project received strong support from Rep. Strickland, city and county officials, and the public.

Although the Port of Olympia owns and leases the property on which the OYO Hotel stands, the property is regulated by the Federal Aviation Commission. Current FAA regulations restrict permanent residency on this property. This restriction must be released to move the project forward.

On Monday, March 28, at 5:30 p.m, Port Commissioners will vote whether or not to approve and fund a contract with the Aviation Planning Group (APG) to research and answer FAA questions regarding the property.

Action: Email Port Commissioners and Port Executive Director, Sam Gibboney. Send before 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 28

Option A: Email the Port of Olympia
  • commissioners@portolympia.com
  • SamG@portolympia.com

Script: Port Commissioners, I ask that you vote to approve and fund the contract with the Aviation Planning Group so that the release of the Port property for permanent residency on which the OYO is located can move forward as quickly as possible. Permanent housing for low income seniors is a critical issue in Thurston County and has strong community support. Your vote to support is required to alleviate this urgent community need.

Thank you.
