Education

Support SB 5186 Simple majority of voters to authorize school district bonds. Sign in PRO
DEADLINE: Feb 24 • 12:30pm
SB 5186 makes it easier for school districts to get approval of bond financing proposals by eliminating the 60% “supermajority” requirement and requiring only a simple majority.

Justice
Support SB 5231 (Connecting Incarcerated People with Friends and Family): Sign in "Pro" for Senate Ways & Means's Public Hearing
DEADLINE: Feb 24 • 12:30pm
The high cost of prison phone calls means that many incarcerated people cannot afford to stay in touch with loved ones or their communities. Protect families and promote public safety by making prison phone calls free.

Support SB 5490 (providing safer body searches of gender-nonconforming individuals in jails or prisons): Sign in "Pro" for Senate Human Services's Public Hearing
DEADLINE: Mar 12 • 12:30pm
This bill would align state law with language in the Prison Rape Elimination Act to make conducting body searches safer for transgender, intersex, or other gender non-conforming individuals in jails or prisons.

Environment
Support SB 5284 (Producer Responsibility in the Management of Packing and Paper Products): Sign in "Pro" for Senate Ways & Means's Public Hearing
DEADLINE: Feb 24 • 12:30pm
This bill aims to utilize the extended producer responsibility in the reduction in packaging and through refill, reuse, recycling and composting of packaging. The bill also aims to increase recycling through education and access to services.

Support SB 5033 (A bill concerning the sampling or testing of biosolids for PFAS Chemicals): Sign in "Pro" for Senate Ways & Means's Public Hearing
DEADLINE: Feb 24 • 12:30pm
Thousands of PFAS chemicals are found in consumer, commercial, and industrial products. Many enter the environment via biosolids applied to soil. Studies show that PFAS chemicals may be taken up by plants from soil. Testing for PFAS is needed to minimize risk to public health and the environment.

Support SB 5667 (improved Amtrak Cascades service to relieve traffic congestion and lower greenhouse gas emissions!): Sign in "Pro" for Senate Transportation's Public Hearing
DEADLINE: Feb 25 • 12:30pm
The Intercity Passenger Rail Improvement Priorities (SB 5667) requires the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Legislature to implement long-awaited improvements to Amtrak Cascades intercity passenger rail service.

Good Government
Email your House Reps: Support the WA VOICES Act
DEADLINE: Feb 28 • 5:00pm
Although many places in our state could soon adopt Ranked-Choice Voting, there are no statewide standards to ensure that it will be implemented right. The WA VOICES Act will make sure that all communities can maintain the same high-quality voting experience that we are used to in WA.

Healthcare
Support HB 1049 to increase access to trained sexual assault nurse examiners by providing a stipend for training. (House: In Committee (Appropriations))
DEADLINE: Feb 28 • 11:00pm
This bill creates a stipend for nurses training to become sexual assault nurse examiners to address a shortage.

Support reproductive health on college campuses (Senate: In Committee (Ways & Means))
DEADLINE: Feb 28 • 11:00pm
This bill ensures the availability of medication abortion to college students who rely on campus health services. It also requires easy access to reproductive health information for students.

Save Our Voting Rights

The so-called Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has been reintroduced in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. What it would really do, if passed, is disenfranchise millions of citizens at home and abroad.

Here are some of the things the bill does:
  • To register to vote, re-register, or make a change of address, people would have to provide a birth certificate, passport, or one of a few other proof-of-citizenship documents. The Brennan Center notes that “tens of millions of Americans register or re-register between every federal election.”
  • Women in particular would be heavily impacted. As many as 69 million women who’ve taken their husband’s last name don’t have a birth certificate that matches their legal name. Unless they have a passport, which is expensive, these women may be unable to vote.
  • Registering to vote by mail and online would no longer be possible because voters must show their citizenship documents “in person” to register. Large registration drives at churches and PTA meetings would become difficult, if not impossible, to conduct.

Local Actions Today

We will encourage our Senators and Representatives in CD10 to vote NO on the SAVE Act. But we also have OI members in Tenino and lower Thurston County whose CD-03 Representative is Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, and many of us have friends in Perez’s district.

Indivisible National confirmed that The SAVE Act could be voted on as early as next week. They are most worried about Rep. Perez voting YES on this act.

Action 1: Please ask all your SW Washington friends to call Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and ask her to vote NO on the SAVE Act.
  •  Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, (202) 225-3536
.
Action 2: Let’s urge our Senators and Representatives to vote NO on the SAVE Act.

Members of Congress (MoCs)
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 202-224-2621; Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 202-224-3411; Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740; Contact Form

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to request that you vote NO on the SAVE Act, which would create unnecessary barriers to voter registration by requiring a passport or birth certificate for registration along with in-person registration.

This bill is designed to disenfranchise voters despite no real evidence of widespread fraud. Please vote against it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Stop Republican Cuts to Medicaid

  • Reuters "To extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, Republicans seek to overlook the cost"
  • Economic Policy Institute “The House Republicans’ plan to cut Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for the rich would slash incomes for the bottom 40%” February 19, 2025

The Republican-majority Congress is taking the axe to Medicaid, which provides medical and long-term care to:
  • 3.6 million children in military and veterans’ families
  • 41% of all births in the U.S.
  • 2/3 of U.S. nursing home residents

The Republicans are manipulating eligibility rules to disqualify more of our low-income and disabled Americans and put “saved” dollars towards the President’s tax cut for the rich. Yet, “We the People,” Democrats and Republicans alike, are saying we approve of Medicaid and should increase it (see link below for the Health Tracking Poll).

Fight for our families! Call ‘em out for their heartless axing of medical care so the $4 trillion of tax cuts for the rich can be funded.

Action: Contact our U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives and urge them to publicly speak out against the Republican Congressional cut to Medicaid.

Members of Congress (MoCs)
  • Senator Patty Murray, Phone: 202-224-2621; Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, Phone: 202-224-3411; Contact Form
  • Marilyn Strickland, Phone: 202-225-9740; Contact Form
  • Or Email all three MoCs at once using Democracy.io.

Script: My name is [NAME]. I am from [CITY, ZIP]. I oppose cuts to Medicaid because they will hurt the most vulnerable among us. Please ask the Senator/Representative to vote accordingly.

Transphobic comments are expected at the next Tumwater School Board meeting this Thursday. This is an opportunity to go and show your support for trans youth, especially trans athletes.

At a recent high school JV girls basketball game, two Tumwater girls sat out and refused to play because one of the players on the opposing team was transgender. (Tumwater went on to win without them; the transgender girl played for five minutes). After the game, one of the girls publicized the incident on social media; she and her mother were then interviewed by rightwing social media influencer Brandi Kruse.

More information in this Olympian article.

Action: Come to the Tumwater school board meeting this Thursday, the 27th, at 6pm at the district office, 621 Linwood Ave SW, Tumwater, WA 98512. Wear your Pride gear. To speak at the meeting, you must register by 6pm Wednesday, February 26.

  • Here is the salty bit: Strickland on AYMAN MSNBC: President Musk and VP Trump Do Not Care About You

“I want to emphasize this, Musk Incorporated and Donald Trump do not care if you get sick, they don’t care if you get access to healthcare. They do not care about your livelihood. They don’t care about your retirement. They do not give a S*** about the American people.”
