Weekly Call To Action - February 22, 2026

2/21/2026

Change Coming

Olympia Indivisible Substack

Substack Subscribe QR Code
Olympia Indivisible emails, including the Call to Action newsletter, will be published on Substack starting 3/9/2026. We will continue to use Mailchimp for our members database. Please do not unsubscribe from Mailchimp emails.

Action: Subscribe to Olympia Indivisible Substack in order to continue to receive OI emails.

The reason we’re making this change:

The Mailchimp newsletter service is tied to our membership database. Members were being inadvertently removed when they unsubscribed. Our solution is to use Substack for communications. You will now be able to filter your subscription by email type or cancel whenever you wish and it will not affect your membership status. Also, it will be much easier to get volunteers trained in publishing.

Readers will be able to subscribe to (or unsubscribe from) individual Sections of any Substack by logging in and going to "Manage Subscription" in their Substack profile. Navigate down to Notifications and select or deselect which type of email you want to receive.

Quote of the Week:

“We must come to see that the end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience.” — Martin Luther King, Jr., Montgomery, Alabama, March 25, 1965

Indivisible National Actions

Celebrate Black history and leadership by examining how past organizers built resilient movements. Explore systemic power structures and inequities, and translate historical lessons into contemporary movement-building and leadership practices.

Indivisible National is thrilled to announce special guest Barbara R. Arnwine, president and founder of the Transformative Justice Coalition. Barbara is internationally renowned for contributions on critical justice issues, including the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1991 and the 2006 reauthorization of provisions of the Voting Rights Act.

Action: Register: Systems and Power: Lessons From Those Who Came Before Us, Monday, February 23, 7pm ET/4pm PT

We have an opportunity to rein in ICE and Border Patrol at the federal level. Congress is negotiating funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes ICE and Border Patrol. We are demanding our members of Congress write a bill that stops the violence in our communities and holds ICE and Border Patrol agents accountable. This is our chance to put significant restrictions on these agencies and ensure they don’t get a single penny more to enable their brutality. Let’s keep up the pressure and make sure our senators hear from us.

Action: Join a phone bank any Tuesday at 10am PST
This is a patch-through phonebank, connecting constituents directly to their senators to tell them to vote “NO” on any appropriations for DHS that fail to rein in ICE.

Legislative Actions:

Community Safety, Immigrant Justice, Voting Rights, Education
Use your constituent power to advocate for progress and justice in the 2026 Washington Legislative Session–it’s in full swing and your help is needed!

Congress: Fix Housing Affordability

Background:
  • What’s in the ROAD to Housing Act of 2025?
  • What’s in the Housing for the 21st Century Act?

Trump claims to have an agenda for addressing housing affordability, but what he’s suggested is ridiculous.

He’d like to change IRA rules so people can withdraw their retirement investments penalty-free for down payments. But many Americans don’t have IRA’s. He thinks that mortgages could be made up to 50 years long. But while that would lower monthly payments, it could add some 20 years and many thousands of dollars to the cost of paying off a mortgage.

Most recently, he says he doesn’t want to lower the cost of housing, but rather wants to keep it high– so wealthier people will keep their wealth.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives recently voted for bills on a bipartisan basis that address housing affordability. They are S 2651, the ROAD to Housing Act, and HR 6644, the Housing for the 21st Century Act. But they both need to be fine-tuned before Congress takes the final vote. Economic issues that affect lower income affordability need to be added to the final bill. We need:

  • Studies on housing for older people and those with disabilities
  • A rental assistance demonstration program
  • The establishment of an eviction helpline
  • The expansion of housing in opportunity zones
  • The creation of a whole home repair zone
  • The reduction of barriers to modular housing
  • The expansion of manufactured housing access

Action: Ask our MOCs to urge the congressional negotiators to include these and other affordability issues in the final bill.

Script: Thank you for your active support of lower-income Americans unable to afford rising rents and home prices. The housing bill package of S 2651 and HR 6644 present a real opportunity to make housing affordability a top priority. During negotiations for the final bill, I urge you to press negotiators to stay committed to incentivizing building affordable homes and addressing the needs of low-income people.

  • Senator Maria Cantwell, ‭(202) 224-3441 ‬or Contact Form

Support a Trans Bill of Rights

For years Donald Trump and the Republican Party have used trans people as targets for the hate and fear they can no longer aim at other minorities. Almost 700 bills targeting transgender people have been introduced since January 1, a political strategy that has mushroomed from 153 bills introduced in 2021 to 1022 bills introduced last year — a near-sevenfold increase over five years. Many gender-nonconforming people live in fear; they know they’re always in some ambitious politicians’ crosshairs.

Twin resolutions have been filed in Congress calling on the federal government to develop and implement a Transgender Bill of Rights “to protect and codify the rights of transgender and nonbinary people under the law and ensure their access to medical care, shelter, safety, and economic security.” Washington’s Pramila Jayapal (D-WA7) is sponsoring the House measure, H. Res. 1058; in the Senate, Ed Markey (D-MA) is sponsoring S. Res. 604.

To be honest, neither resolution will go anywhere in a Republican-dominated Congress. But this is a chance to speak up on the right side of history. And we can flip Congress this year.

Action 1: Contact your Representative and ask her to co-sponsor the House resolution.
  • Marilyn Strickland, CD 10, 202-225-9740 or Contact Form
  • Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, CD 3, 202-225-5916 or Contact Form

Script: As one of your constituents with transgender friends and family threatened by the current administration’s politically-motivated demonization of trans people, I urge you to co-sponsor Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s Transgender Bill of Rights resolution, H. Res. 1058.

Action 2: Contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor the Senate resolution.
  • Senator Patty Murray, 253-572-3636 or Contact Form
  • Senator Maria Cantwell, 253-572-2281 or Contact Form

Script: As one of your constituents with transgender friends and family threatened by the current administration’s politically-motivated demonization of trans people, I urge you to co-sponsor Sen. Ed Markey’s Transgender Bill of Rights resolution, S. Res. 604.

WA State Actions:

Call for Volunteers in Thurston County

While Washington families are struggling to pay for food, housing, and health care, a mega-millionaire from California is spending millions on two poorly written initiatives that threaten the safety of all Washington kids.
IL26-001 Repeal of the Safety Act and IL26-638 Banning Trans Girls from Girls Sports endanger Washington students with invasive medical exams, forced LGBTQ+ outings, and restricted access to help when they need it most, exposing students to more hate, bullying, and harassment.

Volunteers are key to stopping these initiatives in November.

Action: Sign up for NO HATE in WA State’s online volunteer training. Learn more about these initiatives, upcoming volunteer opportunities, and best practices.

Monday, February 23rd, from 7:00 – 8:00 PM Register
Wednesday, February 25th, from 7:00 – 8:00 PM Register

Request a Ballot for Thurston Conservation District Election by March 10th

Thurston Conservation District 2026 Election Timeline
Source: Thurston Conservation District
Olympia Indivisible supports the Thurston Conservation District.

This year, Position 3, held by David Iyall, is up for election. We believe Mr. Iyall has been doing a great job and we want to continue to support him by voting for him.

Supervisors are public officials and are responsible for setting and maintaining overall district policies regarding the management and conservation of natural resources within the District. The successful candidate will become part of a volunteer five-person Board of Supervisors, who each serve without compensation for three-year terms.

Unlike most local elections, to vote for the TCD supervisor, you must request a ballot.

Request a ballot by phone or email: February 2 – March 10
  • Registered voters who reside in the Conservation District boundaries can request a ballot to be mailed to them by contacting TCD polling officers at 564-669-4929 or [email protected].

Request a ballot in person: March 11 – 17
  • Registered voters are welcome to visit the TCD offices during business hours (M-Th, 8am – 4:30pm) to request and pick up a ballot in person.
  • TCD cannot mail ballots to voters after March 10. Voters must pick up ballots in person, to ensure enough turn-around time for voting and returning ballots.

All ballots will be returned via USPS using the pre-stamped and addressed envelope provided with your ballot.

You must request a ballot to be mailed to you. You cannot request a ballot via the Thurston County Auditor’s Office, and a ballot will not automatically be mailed to you.

Learn De-Escalation Skills

To help keep our events non-violent, safe, and lawful, we need people with skills in spotting and defusing conflict. As we gear up for No Kings 3.0, now’s a good time to get those skills into more hands, heads, and hearts.

To that end, OI’s De-Escalation Team has scheduled two trainings for March – one in-person (March 3) and another online (March 12). There is no cost, but each session is limited to 25 people.

Whether you want to join OI’s De-Escalation Team or simply wish to gain confidence as an attendee, we hope you’ll consider signing up!

Action: Register here for one of these two sessions:

  • In-person training: 4 to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, in Olympia
  • Online training: 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 12, online

The sign-up deadline is Friday, February 27. Soon after you register, you will receive a confirmation email with location or log-in information.
