Federal Actions: Force Trump to Pay Tariff Refunds NowImage source: US Government at Wikimedia commons Background
Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court struck down Trump's “emergency” tariffs, ruling he had no authority to impose them. Now more than $130 billion in refunds are owed to US import businesses. In the meantime, interest will keep adding up — an estimated $700 million per month. The Trump administration hasn’t wanted to start paying, arguing to the DC appellate court it will be very complicated and might take years. The court didn’t buy the need for any delay and sent the refund process to the US Court of International Trade for development and administration. The whole situation is a mess, and the unlawful emergency tariff has not only cost businesses money but has jacked up prices for American families. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee calculated the cost of this tariff to American families at $1744 per year. For the past year Trump’s talked about sending checks paid for by tariff funds to middle class and low income people, but now he says that’s not affordable. But California Governor Gavin Newsom and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker are demanding $1700 refunds for everyone in their states. Action 1: Communicate with our Senators:
Script: Thank you for sponsoring the Tariff Refund Act of 2026 along with 20 Senate Democrats. The Act will require full refunds within 180 days and prioritize small businesses. I am asking that you amend the Tariff Refund Act to include refund payments for American families, consistent with the Congressional Joint Democratic Committee calculation that illegal tariff losses cost over $1700 per family for the last year. Action 2: Send a message to Representative Marilyn Strickland Phone: 202-225-9740 if voicemail is full, call any regional office or use Contact Form Script: as your constituent, I am asking you to provide leadership in the collection of tariffs that were found illegal by the Supreme Court. Please work with our Senators on the Tariff Refund Act of 2026 and support it in the House of Representatives. American families should also be included in tariff refunds. Oppose Trump’s “Wellness Influencer” for US Surgeon GeneralPhoto by Chandler Cruttenden on Unsplash Background:
Predictably, Donald Trump’s nominee for US Surgeon General is not a practicing physician but a "wellness influencer”: Casey Means, MD, a surgical residency dropout complete with website, blog, YouTube channel, all the socials, and a lapsed medical license. Dr. Means tempered her rhetoric in her February 25 hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee, backing away from social media posts touting raw milk, spouting myths about birth control pills and autism, and calling immunizing newborns against hepatitis B “a crime” – revealing how little she knows about both hepatitis B and public health. Peter Lurie, MD, MPH, of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, put it best: "Dr. Casey Means has built an outsized online following by articulating breathtakingly misinformed positions on matters of public health, including birth control pills, raw milk, and the causes of autism. Considered alongside the supplement pitching, the conspiratorial thinking, and unscientific mysticism on her blog, she is not qualified for this critical role." Action: Communicate with our Senators:
Script: As a constituent, I oppose the nomination of Casey Means, MD, for Surgeon General. We need a practicing physician devoted to evidence-based medicine who can speak out clearly, not a trend-driven ill-informed “wellness influencer” whose main practice is promoting herself on social media and ingratiating herself with politicians. Please work with your colleagues across the aisle to tell President Trump the Surgeon General to nominate a doctor, not an “influencer.” WA State Actions:New! Media coverage tends to sensationalize the fight over how trans kids should be allowed to live, but what is incredibly rare are the voices of the people at the heart of this debate: transgender and gender nonconforming kids themselves. Lango’s book speaks back to extreme anti-trans rhetoric about youth by showing trans young people as they actually are: powerfully human. Lango has been touring the country for the past 17 months to bring their voices and stories to as many communities as possible, and as part of that work, they will be in Olympia on Thursday, March 12 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for a reading/Q&A at Good Shepherd Olympia. Lango would love for folks from Olympia Indivisible to join them at this event. What: Reading and Q/A with author Nico Lang When: Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 7pm Where: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1601 North St SE, Olympia |
